About Me

Hello Wonderful Roadrunners! My name is Candice Chapa and I am your school Counselor at Harlem Elementary. I have been in education for 18 years. About half of that in Special Education and the other half as a campus Math Specialist. I have received my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at University of Houston main campus and University of Houston Clearlake. I am married with 3 wonderful children and have 2 pets, a dog named Snookie and a cat named Jazz. I am very excited to be your counselor and look forward to helping you, your teachers, and your families with your social, emotional, and academic needs. I will start by encouraging positive character traits which are very important for us all to learn to be nice individuals and to make the right choices. Feel free to write me a note, send an email, or call with any other concerns you may have.

Elementary School Counseling Program

The Model of a Comprehensive, Developmental Guidance and Counseling Program consist of four components of Guidance Curriculum, Responsive Services, Individual Planning, and System Support.

The responsibilities of each area are:

  • Guidance Curriculum - Guidance lessons on a variety of topics; classroom presentation with students.
  • Responsive Services - Individual counseling sessions; parent consultations regarding individual student needs; communicating with outside sources.
  • Individual Planning - Academic and career guidance; parent and student consultation regarding planning and goal-setting; interpretation and analysis of assessment instruments.
  • System Support - Parent education training; teacher consultation; participate in our school improvement plan.

Character

Developing good character is an on-going process at Harlem Elementary. We focus on a different character trait each month. Our character traits are kindness, courage, cooperation, empathy, respect, perseverance, honesty, responsibility, gratitude, and creativity. Students who display the best example of these traits are honored at our BEEP Rally.
