The HJS Band consists of four organizations which are:  Honors Band, Symphonic Band, Training, and Jazz Band.  Students begin in the 6th grade as beginners. After one year in band students have the opportunity to audition for one of the advanced groups.  The Symphonic Band is a group that is classified as an intermediate band and works specifically on polishing skills that will enhance their playing and prepare them for Honors Band and most importantly High School Band. Depending on the instrumentation, the band may perform at UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest.

The Honors Band is the premier group of the school.  It has the most advanced players and performs at all major events such as pep-rally’s, concerts, and parades.  They also compete in UIL events ranging from Texas Music Educators Association Region Band to UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest in April. They also perform a solo for Solo competition in February.

Jazz Ensemble is offered as an after school program to those students who are interested in learning that particular genre.  Mr. Von Silverberg is the director and they meet once a week after school in the spring semester and perform at various locations through out the season.  The Jazz Ensemble received a Gold Award last two years at the Performing Arts Consultants contest in Dallas, Texas. Anyone interested should see Mr. Silverberg for more information.

The philosophy of the band program is to provide a unique a quality music education to all students regardless of their background.  In learning music we strive to make each child a life long learner not only in music but in life because music is art and art imitates life.
