Counseling and Guidance at SCTHS

 

Mission Statement

The Stuart Career Tech High School Counseling Department's mission is to provide a proactive, comprehensive, and developmentally appropriate program to address students' educational and career goals in addition to supporting their social and emotional needs. This is accomplished through a partnership with parents/guardians, staff, and community members to enable all students to become successful, productive citizens and lifelong learners in a diverse and changing world.

 

Program Statement

The SCTHS Counseling Department, Administrators, CIS, and Behavior and Mental Health Specialist will work as a team to empower all students to reach their maximum potential by using a comprehensive program that addresses educational, emotional, and career goals. We will promote an environment to encourage personal inquiry and growth, social responsibility, and academic excellence. School counselors believe that every student can succeed through the collaborative efforts of school, home, and community leading to responsible and productive citizenship in the 21st century.

    Joi Green grew up in the colorful State of Colorado, in the Mile High City, where she completed all of her K12 education and graduated in 1989. She attended Colorado State University and earned a Bachelor's degree in Sociology/Criminal Justice.  Joi worked as a probation officer intern, truancy court assessment writer, was a senior level social worker for the Department of Human Services and was also an adoption caseworker.  Joi earned her Master's degree in School Counseling in 2005 and began her career in education, as a school counselor. 16 years later, she served as the districtwide counselor coordinator on the Career and Innovation Team, leading post-secondary workforce readiness initiatives, graduation requirements, ICAP, AP/IB and dual enrollment. 


    Joi is passionate about supporting each student in having equity and access to multiple career and college pathways and is excited to be here!

    Kathrine Hull started her education in Yoakum, Texas where she graduated high school in 1989. Mrs. Hull attended Blinn Jr. College for two years and later transferred to Sul Ross State University on a cheerleading scholarship. She graduated top of her class in 1995. Mrs. Hull completed her teaching internship in El Paso, Texas working as a Biology I teacher at Eagle Pass High School. After graduation, she worked in Midland as a junior high school coach where she led her athletes to a successful year in competition. Mrs. Hull taught high school and junior high school before coming to Goose Creek in 2004 where she settled in at James Bowie Elementary in Goose Creek. After 15 years of teaching math and science at the elementary level, Mrs. Hull became a Campus Instructional Specialist at Travis Elementary. During this time, Mrs. Hull obtained her Master of Education degree in guidance and counseling. She began her counseling career in January 2022 at Stuart Career Tech High School as an academic guidance counselor where she continues to positively impact the lives of our Goose Creek Giants

    Ms. DeLeon graduated with her Bachelors in Psychology from the University of Houston and her Masters in Psychology from University of Houston-Clear Lake. She began working with Goose Creek CISD as a substitute teacher and then transitioned into the role of Site Coordinator with Communities in Schools of Baytown (CISB), a non-profit drop-out prevention program. Her passion and goals have always aligned with those of CISB, and she is proud to be a part of the organization. As a site coordinator she works with students, teaching them to advocate for themselves and giving them the tools they need to be successful inside and outside of the school setting. Ms. de Leon enjoys reading, listening to music, and the company of her four pets.

School Counseling Program:

 

Professional school counselors must provide a systematic, planned approach for helping all students acquire the skills necessary for successful academic, career, social and emotional development. Texas law requires school counselors to deliver guidance lessons and appropriate interventions. Professional school counselors must provide a systematic, planned approach for helping all students acquire the skills necessary for successful academic, career, social and emotional development.  The Developmental Guidance and Counseling Program (TEC, 33.005) integrates four key components. Goose Creek CISD counselors follow the TEA 4-Component Model of a Comprehensive, Developmental Guidance and Counseling Program. The four components are: Guidance Curriculum, Responsive Services, Individual Planning, and System Support. The responsibilities of each area are:

 

  • Guidance Curriculum - Guidance lessons on a variety of topics; large-group consultations with students
  • Responsive Services - Individual counseling sessions; parent consultations regarding individual student needs; coordination with outside referral sources 
  • Individual Planning - Academic and career guidance; parent and student consultation regarding planning and goal-setting; interpretation and analysis of assessment instruments 
  • System Support - Community outreach; parent education programs; teacher consultation; school improvement planning
